2013 AWARD CATEGORIES – DEFINITIONS & CRITERIA

MAIN CATEGORIES

A compilation of several musical selections of an artiste’s, duo or group’s works issued usually with an over-riding theme (instrumental or lyrical or narrative or compositional).

Awarded to an ARTISTE *from any genre in English or any Nigerian Language *released in the stipulated timeframe *submission by artiste, producer or their agent * As the winner of this award reflects ambassadorship of the Faith, the MOC must as a matter of duty ascertain nominees suitability.

One who composes, conducts or performs music, be it instrumental or vocals.

Awarded to an ARTISTE *from any genre in English or any Nigerian Language *released in the stipulated timeframe *submission by artiste, producer or their agent * As the winner of this award reflects ambassadorship of the Faith, the MOC must as a matter of duty ascertain nominees suitability.

A Male artiste who sings either as a solo artiste or within a group as lead singer and falls within voice type – counter tenor, tenor, baritone, bass. The voice type is measured by vocal range, weight, timbre, texture and chest or head voice. Awarded to the MALE SOLO OR LEAD VOCALIST OF A GROUP *released within the stipulated timeframe *from any genre in English or any Nigerian language *submitted by the artiste or their agent.

A Female who sings either as a solo artiste or within a group as lead singer and falls within voice type – soprano, mezzo-soprano, and contralto. The voice type is measured by vocal range, weight, timbre, texture and chest or head voice. Awarded to the FEMALE SOLO OR LEAD VOCALIST OF A GROUP *released within the stipulated timeframe. *from any genre in English or any Nigerian language. *submitted by the artiste or their agent.

* Duo (2 persons), * Trio (3), * Quartet (4), * Quintet (5), * Small Ensemble (5 – 10). * Large Ensemble (11 – 20) *Awarded to a GROUP or DUO *released in the stipulated timeframe *from any genre *in English or any Nigerian language *submitted by artiste(s), producer or agent.

An Artiste who has not released more than TWO (2) projects during the two qualifying years and has never been nominated for a MEGA award as an Artiste. *Awarded to an ARTISTE, DUO or GROUP *released in the stipulated timeframe *from any genre in English or any Nigerian language *submitted by artiste(s), producer or agent.

An outstanding composition for voice(s) performed by singing usually accompanied by instrumentation or may be unaccompanied. It may be for solo, a duet, a trio or a larger ensemble involving more voices. Awarded to the SONGWRITER (s) *released within the stipulated timeframe *must be an original song in English or any Nigerian language *must have written at least 50% of the song *may be co-written *submitted by the songwriter, producer, the artiste who recorded it or their agent.

The Producer(s) is/are within the music industry working with recording artistes, bands, sound engineers, record labels, etc; (s)he/they oversee(s) and manage(s) the recording process of an artiste’s music. Awarded to the PRODUCER or PRODUCTION TEAM whose work is: *released within the stipulated timeframe *submitted by Producer, agent or artiste(s) for whom the producer has worked.

COLLABORATION (combinations) * A Solo Artiste & a Group , * Two (2) solo artistes, * A Duo & a Group, * Two (2) solo artistes & a Group * Two (2) Groups, * A Solo Artiste & a Choir, *A Vocalist & an Instrumentalist etc. Awarded to ARTISTEs, DUOs or GROUPs that do not usually perform together. This may be in varying combinations as stipulated *released within the stipulated timeframe *any genre within the MEGA awards structure *in English or any Nigerian language *submitted by any of the participating artistes, producers or their agents.

SUB-GENRE CATEGORIES

Contemporary Music is defined as Music marked by characteristics of the present period created and performed reflecting current musical styles and preferences. Awarded to the PRODUCER of the ALBUM whose body of work reflects the music of the present that takes into account the current music trends *songs performed in English (at least 75%) *released in the stipulated timeframe. *submitted by artiste or agent.

Contemporary Music is defined as Music marked by characteristics of the present period created and performed, reflecting current musical styles and preferences. Awarded to the PRODUCER of the ALBUM whose body of work reflects the music of the present that takes into account the current music trends *songs performed in a Nigerian language (at least 75%) *released in the stipulated timeframe *submitted by artiste or agent.

Praise & Worship mean two different things, but they are used interchangeably. They are not based on tempo but on the words spoken and expression given. Stylistically contemporary and linked to pop music Awarded to the PRODUCER(s) of the ALBUM whose body of work best encompasses both praise and worship based on words and expression in line with biblical precepts. *released in the stipulated time *must have a balance between praise & worship * submitted by producer, or agent.

SOLO/GROUP PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES

Contemporary Music is defined as Music marked by characteristics of the present period created and performed, reflecting current musical styles and preferences. Awarded to the PRODUCER of the ALBUM whose body of work reflects the music of the present that takes into account the current music trends *songs performed in a Nigerian language (at least 75%). *released in the stipulated timeframe. *submitted by artiste or agent.

GENERAL CATEGORIES

Awarded to the designer of a CD, DVD and/or Album designed, illustrated, artistically directed or packaged by a Nigerian artist.

Awarded to the director of the an outstanding video/film recording of at least 45 minutes in length, and which themes and conflict resolutions are steeped in biblical precepts and relevance.

Awarded to the artiste for a single concept or live video recording.

SPECIAL AWARDS

This Special award is presented by the MOC to an outstanding song which captivates the imagination and evokes the admiration of the generality of the Nigerian populace - within the eligible year under review (2012). This song, irrespective of its arrangement or theme shall reflect the simplest slant towards biblical precepts and shall have received the largest number of votes from the Nigerian public through diverse media formats. Technically, it shall fulfil the fundamental definition of a song: a composition for voice(s) performed by singing usually accompanied by instrumentation or may be unaccompanied. It may be for solo, a duet, a trio or a larger ensemble involving more voices.

Awarded to a press reporter or writer whose consistent and informative reportage of Christian news, activities and sundry affairs have a significant readership among the Nigerian audience. He/She should also command the admiration of his peers on either side of the divide.

Awarded to a radio reporter or presenter whose consistent and informative presentation of Christian news, activities and sundry affairs have a significant listenership among the Nigerian audience. He/She should also command the admiration of his/her peers on either side of the divide.

Awarded to a television reporter or presenter whose consistent and informative presentation of Christian news, activities and sundry affairs have a significant viewership among the Nigerian audience. He/She should also command the admiration of his/her peers on either side of the divide.

HONORARY AWARDS

This Special award is bestowed by the MOC on individuals whose names are synonymous with greatness through distinguished and extensive careers in the gospel music arena. The individual(s), more often than not, are retired, retiring or otherwise unsung veterans of the sung Word whose efforts have long-lasting influences within the genre – over several years and eras.

This Special award is given by the MOC to an individual (or more) in recognition of most outstanding contributions in any field of human endeavours with direct or indirect influence or impact on the growth and enrichment of gospel music or advancement of God’s kingdom on earth. The individual need not be a minister, musician or a practitioner within the genre.
